Any earthly father, no matter how vast his wealth, has a limit to what he can bestow upon his offspring. But the father in this parable represents the God of the universe, the one who owns the cattle on a thousand hills, who can give to us limitlessly. His gifts to one of his children never diminish his ability to give to another. God is the only father can say truthfully to more than one child, “All that I have is yours.” And that God has he has given to us, especially the gift of his Son Jesus, as revealed in the bread and wine of communion.
