Discipleship Groups

Why Discipleship Groups?

Much has changed in the two millennia since Jesus called his first disciples, but the bedrock of our lives and faith remains the same.  We follow the risen Christ who has called to all who would hear, “Follow me.”

For those who heed Jesus’ summoning, an entirely new life opens up.  Just as Jesus’ call to his first twelve followers led to their going forth into the world with new purpose, so too does Jesus’ call on our lives lead each of us into our families, neighborhoods, and workplaces with new purpose.

Discipleship is following to go.  It touches everything of life.   And although Christian discipleship is a vast subject and a lifelong process, we stress five core patterns derived from Jesus’ own example:

  • Attentiveness
  • Rhythm
  • Relationships
  • Leadership
  • Mission

All discipleship ultimately is intended to lead to mission, and all mission is deeply dependent on sound discipleship.  They are part of the same activity of God in Christ.  Our calling and sending are rooted in worship: the mystery and wonder of God’s incarnation, cross, and resurrection life.

Discipleship Group Materials

While we hope you begin with the 'Introduction to Discipleship Groups,' the other booklets are not designed for you to pursue in any particular order. Once your group has completed the introduction, please move on to any of the others as you feel led.

Start Here: Introduction to Discipleship Groups

This 5-week group series offers an overview to our vision of being rooted in discipleship at St. George's, briefly exploring each of the 5 topics that will later be available for their own, deeper study.  In small group setting, you'll be led through scripture readings, discussion, and prayer centered around Attentiveness, Rhythm, Relationships, Leadership, and Mission — each following the model that Jesus gives us.
