The Table - A New Setting for Worship

Join us at The Table

on Sunday Mornings

New Worship Service starting Sept. 18th

In Johnson Hall every Sunday at 9:00am

What is our worship at The Table like?

  • We follow the classic Anglican order of worship – a call to worship, songs of praise, Scripture readings and a message, a time of prayer and confession, and the celebration of the Eucharist around a common table.
  • We enter into God's presence and worship God through a variety of musical styles, led by our music team.
  • We incorporate liturgical traditions from around the Anglican Communion, reminding us that we belong to a larger church family worshipping God across the world.
  • We welcome adults, children, and students, no matter where you are in your journey with God, to join us.

Our prayer is that The Table will provide an opportunity for us to deepen and broaden our relationship with Jesus Christ.       We invite you to join us as we gather around the Table of our Lord.

             - The Revs. Malone Gilliam and Sarah Kerr

Introducing The Table

- by Eb LeMaster, Senior Warden at St. George's

I am very excited about the new worship service, The Table, that begins this fall. It is one of the biggest new things happening at St. George’s this year. In fact, the new service was first included in our strategic plan back in 2007, and now as of September we have launched the first new service at St. George’s in over 10 years. Our clergy team, Vestry, staff, and other lay volunteers have spent significant time preparing for the new service. Many of us have questions and concerns related to the new service, such as:

• What’s it all about?
• II like the way St. George’s already worships. Why do we need something different?
• Will it be too casual, too contemporary, too different?
• Will it be different enough?
• How will parking and logistics work since it overlaps with the 8:45 service?
• How will it impact the 8:45 and other services?

I understand these concerns, and the leaders of St. George's have discussed them at length. At the end of the day, the answer to the question, ”Why are we doing this?” is simple -- to provide a new and exciting way to inspire existing members, potential new members, and others who will connect with a different style of worship. I strongly believe that a more casual, contemporary style of worship will provide additional energy at St. George’s. Over the past several years, we have seen how the introduction of new offerings such as CLC, GEORGE, and the C3 Conference have enriched our common life. My sincere hope is that this service does the same. As we begin this new service, we hope to provide:

• A new, vibrant format of worship that is still in keeping with our traditions
• Additional opportunities for our "deep-bench" clergy to preach
• Worship that some may find simpler and more accessible, especially for those new to the Anglican tradition
• A service that may be easier for our youth to connect with and understand
• A service that leverages many of the things St. George’s already does so well

This is not meant to be negative about our current services, as we already have a rich tradition of worship at St. George's. We feel, however, that this service can build further on our strengths. The Vestry and I ask one favor of you: have an open heart and mind and come try it. In the end, this is not about what we are doing or what we can achieve; rather, this is about providing a new setting for God to do His work among us and providing a new way for us to glorify Him.
