To Which Tribe Do You Belong?

I do not recall ever hearing the word “tribalism” in a good way. It is usually employed pejoratively, describing a mindset that is more closed than even mere parochialism would suggest. To ascribe one to a tribe in our day is usually not a compliment. So I am intrigued by author and Christian researcher George Barna’s latest book, The Seven Faith Tribes, wherein he argues that America’s religious institutions have not responded well to cultural change in recent decades resulting in the erosion of shared and formerly honored values. Apparently, Barna does not believe it helpful to categorize people’s spiritual loyalties any longer according to institutional affiliation. Rather, he orders American faith commitments (or lack thereof) according to these seven tribes.

§ Casual Christians – 66% of the adult population
§ Captive Christians – 16% of the adult population
§ Jews – 2% of the adult population
§ Mormons – 2% of the adult population
§ Pantheists – 2% of the adult population
§ Muslims – one-half of 1% of the adult population
§ Skeptics – 11% of the adult population

Where do you fit among these tribes? I am interested to learn more about Barna’s thesis and intend to get the book. In the meantime, I found the attached link helpful: http://www.barna.org/barna-update/article/13-culture/262-americas-seven-faith-tribes-hold-the-key-to-national-restoration
