Hot Topics from Pop Culture

6:15pm – 7:30pm, Hampton Hall

Every day we encounter messages and images that impress significant truths upon us. This class will examine ways to be wisely discerning about the cultural assumptions we live under. How can we understand better the values of Scripture and Christian faith in light of the stresses and opportunities of living as Christians in a world that isn’t? Sample topics include:

  • Why Not Let Popular Culture Settle the Big Issues?
  • Aren’t All Religions the Same at the Core?
  • Why Choose Marriage Over Living Together?
  • Does Science Contradict the Bible?
  • What Does It Mean that Human Life Is Sacred?

Breaking the Code: Understanding the Book of Revelation

6:15pm – 7:30pm, Dandridge B

Among the least read Bible books is Revelation.   Why?  Although the book of Revelation contains passages of great beauty and comfort, it also has passages that strike us as bizarre, bewildering, and frightening.   As its name implies, this final book of the Bible is a revealing of God’s design for the end times.  Our companion book is Breaking the Code. Led by the Rev. Roger Senechal.

Life & Death Matters

6:30pm – 8:00pm, Room 210

What are your plans for the future?  This class will consider the mysteries of God and his promises for life after death.  It is relevant not only to Seniors, but to caregivers, families of Seniors, and persons of any age.  The text, Living Fully, Dying Well by Rueben Job, will be augmented with additional material, Bible readings, and discussions.  Limited to 15.  For more information, contact Lynn Ragland at 385-2150 x 247 or Bets Ramsey at 463-2583.

Companions in Christ: The Way of Grace

6:15pm – 8:15pm, Room 211

September 8th – November 10th

This nine-week study in the Companions series explores the Gospel of John.  The class will examine and discuss the encounters between several Biblical characters and Jesus, which lead to a transformation of their lives.  If you long to open your heart to a deeper knowing of God’s grace – to recognize the “soul’s deep compass steering us Godward” – this is the study for you.  For more information, contact Lynn Ragland at 385-2150 x 247 or Helen Schley at 297-4751.

Student Discipleship

Finding God in Harry Potter

6:15pm – 7:45pm, Akers Hall

Come explore the Harry Potter books and movies to discover how they might relate to your faith.  Led by the Rev. Sarah Kerr and Leslie Overby.

Children’s Programming

We’re excited about our children’s programming during Wednesday Night Live! Children should expect a good time singing songs, playing games, and learning more about the God who loves them. Each week we will have a main Bible story/lesson that will help children relate and see Jesus in their lives today.  Adult volunteer help is needed for Wednesday evenings.  If you are interested, please contact Abby Lomax at 385-2150 x 265.
