Sunday Discipleship for Adults

Deepening Our Discipleship: Growing in Faith and Friendship

Jesus used a vital and important word for those who followed him: Disciple. The word simply means learner, student, apprentice. Discipleship, that lifelong process of growing and learning, has to do with everyday matters and ordinary challenges. It keeps us thinking about trying to live faithfully in the culture in which we live. And it has to do with deepening our friendship with fellow learners. On this page and throughout the website, note significant, even life-changing offerings for children, youth, and adult disciples.

Rector’s Forum: Reading Mark's Gospel with 21st Century Eyes

The Rev . Leigh Spruill

Johnson Hall

Many of us lack confidence in our biblical knowledge and long to be more familiar with the story of the gospel.  This course aims to help.  It will provide a lively engagement with the Gospel According to Mark, the earliest gospel written and the most action-oriented.  We will look at Mark with this question in mind: how does the witness to Jesus’ life in this gospel encourage us to contemplate more robust Christian living for ourselves? We will also read Mark with an eye on contemporary culture, considering film, music, literature, and politics in our engagement with this unique gospel narrative.

Back to the Future: Highlights from Church History

The Rev. Malone Gilliam

Hampton Hall

As Alvin Toffler pointed out in his book Future Shock (1970), we are so preoccupied with handling the future as it rushes toward us, that we have little attention or energy left for remembering the past. Why does the church as we know it look the way it does? Have we always believed this way or has the church changed over the centuries? Does it matter? Should we care? Our Christian faith in America is the sum of decisions and events from our past. This reality shapes who we are and how we envision God, the church, and ourselves.  Join the Rev. Malone Gilliam and take a “Bill and Ted”-like excellent adventure through church history, “island hopping” through the centuries and (re)discovering our heritage within the Christian Church!

Read the Bible in 90 days!  Yes, it CAN be done!  The Bible in 90 Days is a unique program that minimizes the hurdles most people stumble over when trying to read the entire Bible.  The goal is to read the Bible quickly but attentively in order to sense the broad sweep of salvation history, the Garden of Eden to the new heaven and new earth, prophesy and fulfillment in Jesus Christ.  Copies of The Bible in 90 Days and The Essential Bible Companion are available in the St. George’s Bookstore.  Participants can begin reading at any time before class begins to get a head start.  Questions? Contact the Rev. Marcia King at 385-2150 x 214. (Note: You may pick up the Bible and begin reading at any time to get a head start!)
